![]() Campers eagerly listened and watched as Chris taught them about the local Native Americans that settled the area, how they started fires, protected themselves, and used plants for medicine. Retired environmental educator from Mercer Conservation District, Chris Mosebach, started off Nature Camp with a Medicine Man talk. On Monday, campers went back in time to learn how the Delaware Indians lived side by side with nature. Each day campers learned about a different environmentally focused theme through presentations, interactive activities, and crafts. Students from six local school districts located in Lawrence, Beaver, and Erie County attended the five day camp. The rink is available for recreational use and also hosts leagues and other group outings. In addition to the fields, there is also a ‘Tot Lot’ playground, a shelter, and a lighted dek hockey rink. The main causeway into Stiefel Park, Hack Wilson Drive, is named after a famous Ellwoodian and Major League Baseball record holder, Hack Wilson. In 1942, Ellwood City purchased the property from North Sewickley Township for use as a park and has maintained Steifel since. The Brickyard operation closed in 1929, a casualty of the Great Depression. The area was first called the Brickyard early in the 1900s, as it was home to Clydesdale Quarries, where limestone, sand, coal, and clay were mined, and there were kilns for making brick. Stiefel Park, a 69-acre piece of land, is located high on the southern hills within the Borough of Ellwood City. Other attractions include a basketball court, bocce courts, a skate park, a swimming pool, tennis courts, and many other amenities. ![]() Another main causeway in Ewing Park is Carmen Beatrice Drive, named after the late Carmen Beatrice who was a significant contributor to many Ellwood City sports and is recognized and remembered by many in the Ellwood City community. Streets within Ewing Park include Madison, Jefferson, Adams, and Washington Avenues, named after United States presidents and Haig, Pershing, and Foch Streets, named after World War I Allied generals. It also has three baseball fields of varying sizes for athletes from elementary through varsity and a 400-meter polyurethane track that is open to the public from spring to fall. Lincoln High School’s Helling Stadium is a fully equipped stadium that becomes the center of community activity every Friday night during football season. Ewing Park is the second largest park in the Borough of Ellwood City and is home to the facilities that Lincoln High School uses for its high school sporting events.
